Jelly Donut Gang trap Bruins in 5.
Any team that can boast a lineup of Grieve, Jeter, Griffey, Stairs,
Ramirez, Walker, Higginson, Cirillo as their top 8 batters has to be
considered a favourite. Unless, of course, the starting pitching
underperforms. That was the case for the LA Bad News Bruins (note to
readers: there are _4_ teams with this moniker in this tournament, and 2
others called Bad News Bruins; Mr. Dan Young seems to be lacking in
creative names, but not in team submissions). With none of the Bruin
starters lasting more than 5.1IP, and having to face Schilling or Maddux in
three of the first five games, it became readily apparent that this wasn't
going to be a (teddy bear) picnic against Theoren Skyles' Gang.
Game 1
If this matchup had been early in the season, Colon might have been able to
beat Maddux. Unfortunately timely hitting and an early hook number meant
that Colon (4.2IP 3ER) took the loss in the 4-3 decision. Maddux wasn't
much better than Colon in the early going (7IP 3ER) but hung around long
enough to get the win. A solid 8th/9th inning from Billy Wagner closed the
door on this rather lackluster game (the only individual statistic being
Griffey's solo shot in the 8th).
Game 2
A constant barrage of singles, doubles and drawn walks (only one 1-2-3
inning for each team) allowed the Gang to squeak out a 6-5 win against the
Bruins. Schilling duplicated Maddux's performance in game 1 (7IP 3ER) but
wasn't able to hang around for the win. The Bruins had the lead (and lost
it) 3 times before the Gang took the lead in the 6th inning 5-3 on the
strength of RBI doubles from Tabensee and Morandini and singles from
Jefferies and Olerud. Not giving up, the Bruins tied the game in the 8th
inning with 2-RBI double from Higginson as Wagner put two on and Mantei
gave up the tying hit (and blown save). The celebration didn't last long
as Runyan came in to work the bottom of the inning and gave up three
singles with two outs, the last one from Bonds scoring Klesko (his 2nd RBI
of the game). Even then, the Bruins made it interesting in the 9th inning
by getting men on 1st and 2nd with one out, but Dennis Cook closed the door
(and got the save).
Game 3
The Bruin bats finally came into play (as well as an error from Caminiti)
as the Bruins won handily, 6-2. While Sele may have been the victim of an
early hook number (4IP 2ER), Rick Reed may have been the victim of a late
hook number (6.2IP 6R 4ER), the Caminiti error, and poor relief pitching.
After scoring 2 runs in the 6th inning off Reed to take the lead 4-2, Todd
Walker grounded to Caminiti who booted the ball, leaving a 1st-&-2nd
situation for the new pitcher Cook. Cook had no better luck on his own,
walking Higginson and then allowing a 2-run scoring single to Cirillo
before getting yanked himself. That 4 run 6th was all that the Bruins
needed for the rest of the game as Ramiro Mendoza pitched a very strong
2.1IP for the win and Doug Brocail closed out the 9th for the save with the
bases loaded.
Game 4
Obviously humbled by their previously punchless attack, the Gang came out
slugging in the 4th game. Powered by back-to-back HR in the first inning
from Olerud and Bonds, and 6IP of strong relief from their bullpen, the
Gang won easily 7-1. Neither starting pitcher made it to the 4th inning,
Kerry Wood because of his lack of innings (3IP 1ER), Wilson Alvarez because
of his lack of good innings (2IP 5R 4ER). The vaunted offence of the
Bruins was silent, failing to register an extra base hit in the game except
for Grieve's solo HR in the 3rd inning, and ending 5 innings with 2 men
stranded on base. The win was awarded to Turk Wendell (note: could someone
explain how the computer decides which reliever gets a win when the starter
leaves early with the lead? In this case, all 5 relievers "pitched
effectively".).
Game 5
While they may have lost the series 4-1, it should be noted that the Bruins
fought hard in the final game, coming from behind twice before bowing out
4-3. Maddux threw a duplicate of his first appearance (7IP 3ER) but hung
around one batter too long, giving up a game-tying solo shot to Derek Jeter
in the 8th inning. Colon had another short outing (4IP 1ER) and watched
from the bench as Mendoza and Crow gave up 2 runs in the 5th. After tying
the game in the 8th, the Bruins ran out Brocail to pitch the 9th and looked
on as Caminiti put one over the fence (giving him 3RBI for the game).
Wagner pitched his 2nd consecutive strong inning and earned the win,
striking out Grieve with 2 on in the bottom of the 9th.
